During the event, INVVU Director Kevin Hogwood and Managing Director Phil Johnson FICE delivered a presentation exploring the challenges and opportunities involved in preserving and enhancing the UK’s railway heritage assets.

Drawing on INVVU’s extensive experience across the rail sector, the presentation highlighted the complexities of delivering successful heritage projects and demonstrated why conserving railway heritage requires far more than simply restoring an asset’s appearance. Successful outcomes rely on careful research, evidence-led design, stakeholder collaboration, technical assurance and a robust approvals strategy from the very beginning.

Case studies showcased during the presentation included Peckham Rye Station, Lewes Platform Shelter, Bishopstone Station, Hanwell Station, Denmark Hill Station and the restoration of historic station maps. These projects illustrated how heritage considerations, railway assurance, planning requirements and operational needs must be carefully integrated to create sustainable, long-term solutions.

A key theme throughout the session was the importance of collaboration. Heritage projects are most successful when clients, designers, contractors, railway stakeholders and specialist consultants work together from the outset, creating a coordinated approach that balances conservation, safety, operational performance and future maintenance requirements.
