Services Provided: GRIP 5 (detailed design) stage structural, drainage and M&E design services & management of Network Rail consents process

INVVU Construction Consultants were commissioned by ermc to undertake the detailed structural, drainage and mechanical & electrical design services for the refurbishment of Ryde Esplanade Railway Station. ermc were the Principal Designer, whilst being responsible for the architectural design proposals.

Ryde Esplanade Railway Station is a category E operational station, originally opened in 1880. The station forms part of the Island Line, currently operated by South Western Railway (SWR) and is located immediately adjacent to the northern coastline of the Isle of Wight and Ryde’s main high street. This key interchange station serves as a gateway to the island, with links to ferry and hovercraft terminals, bus station and taxi rank.

Proposed Works Included:

  • Creation of new ticket office and staff amenities within the redundant rooms formally used as café and office space, including a new booking hall space
  • Relocation of the Southern Vectis (bus operator) travel centre
  • Creation and improvements to retail spaces (provision of shell and core units)
  • Refurbishment and reopening of existing male and female WCs & relocation of accessible WC
  • New and improved station entrances
  • Improved façade treatment and sympathetic modernisation of external aesthetic appearance of the station

Design Services Provided:

  • Design management
  • Structural permanent works design of new steel-framed structures and foundations required for modernisation of the station’s aesthetic, and various other associated works.
  • Structural temporary works designs for propping, hoarding & openings support.
  • Category II design checks on structural permanent & temporary works designs
  • Commissioning of Category III design checks by 3rd parties on structural temporary works designs
  • CRE-D review of proposed architectural design
  • Mechanical & Electrical designs for new LV distribution/small power, heating, lighting & fire alarm systems
  • Designed alterations to surface water & foul drainage
  • Construction stage retention to provide ongoing support to Principal Contractor 

Network Rail Consents Services Provided:

  • Management of interface between Network Rail & multiple key stakeholders
  • Fulfilment of Contractor’s Responsible Engineer for Design & Construction (CRE-D & CRE-C) and Contractor’s Engineering Manager (CEM) roles
  • Production and submission of Form A (Approval in Principle) & Form D (Architectural and layout acceptance)
  • Production and submission of Form B (Permanent Works Design & Check) for civils, structures and M&E designs
  • Production and submission of Form C (Temporary Works Design & Check) for structural temporary works designs
  • Consistent involvement in Interdisciplinary Design Check/Review meetings
  • Production and submission of other documentation (Landlord’s Consent, CSM, DIA, Station Capacity Assessment, BEAP, Security Assessment, Fire Strategy, AMP, Network Change, Form E & various Technical Statements)
